It is rare to find a National or Military Accuracy Team that does not use the Jalbert Parafoil. If you’re serious it is the only logical choice.

There are three Parafoil models. Each with features that appeal to the Accuracy Jumper. Each individual Accuracy Jumper has their own preferences as to what they want in their canopy. Canopies low(er) in aspect ratio and ellipticity (fat 7-cell canopies) have better heading performance, and stability in flight –  good for when you’re spun up in line twists after opening – something you wingsuit pilots tell us is possible no matter how much we scream “BODY POSITION” at you!

The problem with this is, wings shaped like this are not exactly renowned for their glide performance and sharp handling.

So how do we make something handicapped by the very nature of its job fly well? The answer – as usual – was a combination of ideas floating around the head of NZ Aerosports  aeronautical engineer Julien, and the production and test jump team.

Designing the Kraken was a long process because it was new to us. Traditionally NZA has  focused more on flight performance than on opening a canopy in a wingsuit wake. So it took us a few years, but ended up with a very technical canopy full of cool features and ideas that makes it very different from any existing wingsuit canopy.

The result is a low bulk (she packs about 15% smaller than a 9-cell non-crossbraced canopy like the Safire 3 or Crossfire 3), long lasting canopy with very reliable and stable openings that lands like a dream.

This is our very first wingsuit specific parachute. The result of thousands of test jumps,cutaways, and lots of spilt (and consumed) beer. Whist other manufacturers approached designing this type of wing drawing from their experience with BASE canopies, we looked to our deep understanding of modern day wings, aerodynamics, and type of ingenuity that produces world class skydiving parachutes – our trademark.

All in all, we’re super proud of what we’ve ended up with. We have a canopy that is bloody good for its intended purpose of opening well after you’re finished prancing around the sky in your dress…ahem, wingsuit… and simultaneously offers a fun filled flight and powerful flare. Oh, and if you jump it slick, it won’t break your back. Nice.

FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS

Openings
The game changer. We knew this was a big factor to all the wingsuiters out there. The modern day wingsuit is capable of  incredible glide, but this efficiency brings its own set of complications when designing a parachute to match. The biggest factor is the turbulent wake formed behind the wingsuit – right where you deploy your parachute…

Kraken openings are quick but not hard – you’ll feel inflation immediately. The vent helps control the heading. Once the center cell and adjacent cells inflate, the canopy slowly pressurises with a predictable reliability. Should line-twists occur, fear not! The Kraken will sail on level seas. Aarrrrgh-me Hearties! [Applicable Pirate reference. ]

Inputs
Intuitive and precise, each input delivers a predictable response. From opening to landing the Kraken is a confidence builder.

Toggles
Your first point of contact leaves you knowing you’ve taken control. Big inputs will produce an immediate response. Flying slow and steady you’ll always feel in control and connected to the canopy.

Stall point
The slow flight characteristics were a very important design factor. You’ll get plenty of warning before she stalls. Slowly let the toggles back out and she will recover to normal flight in an easy and stress free transition.

Rear risers
There’s lots of feel and response – the Kraken has fantastic glide! Milk those rears and disprove the myth that all wingsuiters land off.

Front Risers
F is for fun! Yep, you can dive the Kraken, and she will respond!

Performance
The Kraken has designed to be an exceptional wingsuit canopy. This also meant making sure she didn’t feel like a bus. She’s got loads of zip. Fly her nice and slow for those busy landing patterns when you want lots of vertical separation. Or dive her at the ground and drag some turf! There’s plenty of fun to be had!

Recovery Arc
We are are firm believer this canopy should have some dive. The recovery arc is longer than typically experienced with similar 7 cell designs. If you want to have your cake (a nice sensible wingsuit canopy) and eat it too (swoop the shit out of it), then go go go!

Flare
The Kraken has a wide range of performance, the flare is one of the most important aspects. She wont dissapoint. Those nil wind tiptoe landings will feel very natural.

Our aim was to create a canopy to perform well at super light wingloadings. The centre vell vent and new slider design does just that – the starting point for confidence inspiring openings.

Larger Crossports & Inlets
Openings are the beginning of an AFF students’ canopy flight and sets them up for success. FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS

What can you expect when you fly your brand new Crossfire 3 for the first time?
The unique blend of awesome openings, hassle-free flight and unrestricted everyday practicality that the Crossfire is known for, mixed with the cutting edge design and performance that is typical of NZ Aerosports’ high performance wings. And the inevitable desire to do it all again after every landing.

Who is the Crossfire 3 for?
The most important thing to note with the Crossfire 3 is that she is a fully elliptical, very efficiently designed high performance canopy. She is not suitable as a first canopy for students off AFF. She must be treated with respect and caution at all times, but particularly in the adjustment period with the new wing. Her dive is more aggressive and her recovery arc longer than the Crossfire 2. The sight picture for your turn, landing and flare will be different than the wings you have flown before.

At light wingloadings of 1.0 to 1.4, the Crossfire 3 is suitable as a first or second fully elliptical 9-cell for confident intermediate jumpers stepping it up a notch or three from their Safire 2, 3 or equivalent. We recommend a minimum of 500 jumps on a square or semi-elliptical canopy before moving to a Crossfire 3 of an appropriate wingloading for these jumpers.

At higher wingloadings of 1.5 and above, the Crossfire 3 is an all new machine for those jumpers already accustomed to flying smaller/higher loaded Crossfire 2’s or other elliptical 9-cells. She’s a step up in performance. She whips around, dives hard, recovers slow, and eats up the ground in a swoop. She is perfect for advanced pilots who want a fun hassle-free canopy without going crossbraced, and a favorite among team flyers and camera-flyers.

Openings

The Crossfire 2 hit the sweet spot for openings. The fully formed nose gave her a cleaner leading edge and consistently soft openings without the fear of spinning up. JYRO figured if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So you can expect those same smooth delicious openings on your Crossfire 3.

Inputs
Inputs are how any canopy is defined…how does it feel? Everything about the Crossfire 3 is focused on effortless fun flight time. From the second you pop those brakes everything becomes sublime, responsive and predictable.

Toggles
Toggles give you all the feedback you need to feel connected with this wing. More aggressive inputs will cause drastic altitude loss, but if you feel inclined to sit in deep brakes taking in that last jump and reflecting on how damn awesome it was, she is happy to oblige.

Stall Point
Her stall point is predictable – you will recognise when she is telling you it’s time to let up. Rears are predictable too. She’ll give you plenty of warning before the nasty stuff happens and you’ll know quite quickly how far you can milk them before switching to toggles.

Rears
The extra glide helped by her constant cell aspect ratio means you can hang off your rears for a worry-free ride back to the dropzone after a long spot. Or use them to give you that exhilarating swoop to end your skydive.

Fronts
Wanna change up a gear? Swooping is your jam? No problem – she’s just as happy floating back to the drop zone on brakes as she is being pushed as far and as fast as you can. The fronts feel lighter but not vague. You can judge precisely and predictably how much or little you need them.

Performance
Enjoy the ultimate fun flying experience without the drag (pun sadly intended) of a less responsive wing. The highly elliptical Crossfire 3 has snappy turns and incredible performance.

The Dive
Probably the biggest question JYRO have been asked. Yes, she does dive more! They made this a priority. Drooped wing-tips minimize wingtip drag to maximize efficiency and power. The dive is also predictable and controllable, giving you the confidence to find consistency in your landing. Feel confident whipping through your turn knowing that you can harness a huge amount of power for your landing.

Recovery
Whether doing a 90 or banging out a massive rotation, the recovery arc is something we know you will love. An advanced trim makes the Crossfire 3’s recovery arc considerably longer than the Crossfire 2 and introduces you to a new sight picture.

It’s extremely important to bear this in mind that if you are transitioning from a Safire 2 or 3, or a Crossfire 2. The recovery arc is significantly longer, so if you turn it at the same height as you are used to, you will come out low. It will take a bit of time to retrain your brain to the new sight picture, so stay alert, treat the wing with respect and take it slow while you adjust to it.

Flare
She will give you huge confidence on landing with a powerful predictable flare. Enjoy your swoop without worrying about hard landings; the nose reinforcement reduces distortion during the flare to give you that much needed extra lift at the bottom end.
