Background
The original Icarus Canopies (now JYRO) Tandem canopy was the first zero porosity tandem released to the market. Today’s JYRO Tandem stems from those strong roots: proven construction, now with newer, better fabrics, an elliptical shape and options found nowhere else in the industry.

Materials
With tough ZP construction the JYRO Tandem will retain it’s as-new performance for thousands of jumps. Your tandem instructors won’t be avoiding older rigs any more – but the packers might be avoiding the new ones at first!

What can you expect when you fly your JYRO Tandem for the first time?
Smooth familiarity, responsive flight, and a quiet comfortability knowing you’ve done all this before. The JYRO Tandem is reminiscent of your everyday large sports canopy – you’ll feel at home from the moment you pitch until the moment your passenger slides gently onto the landing area.

Openings
The openings are soft, consistent, comfortable and take 500-700ft. There is a variable lip over the nose there is no flag or hole in the slider – the slider is flat. There are no brake settings, which makes for easy packing with no downside. She opens centre cell first with the ends collapsed and the remaining cells inflate slowly. Off-heading openings do happen but she doesn’t dive away; even testing the wing Tandem Terminal (drogueless) she gave nothing but sweet smooth openings.

Inputs
The control inputs, whether dual or single toggles, provide a huge amount of performance and range. She reacts with speed and precision and goes exactly where you put her. There is just the right amount of feedback, so your passenger stays comfortable, and her agility means that you can still have some fun on your way down!

Using the dual set up you will notice refreshingly light toggle pressure when using only the steering toggles, giving you fast, responsive manoeuvrability with a little less effort. Come time to pick up the flare toggles you will notice the added power giving you confident, consistent landings. With the single toggle setup, it’s comparable to that of a large sports wing – a quick response and all the power ready to go at the pull of a toggle.

When landing time comes, the single setup offers everything required for the same confident and consistent landings.

Stall Point
The JYRO Tandem has an extremely deep stall point bordering on almost impossible to find! You can be comfortable knowing she will maintain safe flight while sitting in deep brakes. This makes stacking for landing a hassle and worry free job.

Performance
Powerful responsive toggles for a ton of flare power, an extremely efficient glide for getting back from long spots and a very stable platform for handling rough turbulence.

The Dive
She offers a comfortable dive that helps generate added speed and power, translating to a powerful flare.

Recovery

Landings
A fully elliptical planform means landings are a dream. Landings on the 365 size and above are more gentle than any tandem canopies we’ve tried. The 6 & 2 option is manoeuvrable enough to build up a lot of speed for a good surf if that’s what you’re into. Nil winds with heavy loads will still have some minimal forward speed, and the light toggle pressure makes flaring and controlling the flare suuuuper easy.

The name Twin is there for a reason. As we started to develop our own Tandem canopies, we spent a lot of time defining their performance envelope, based on the requirements of passenger and pilot. Especially the suspended weights, which will not change as the tandem pair has to transit from main to reserve, convinced us that main and reserve needed to be identical. Twins, alright.

The new Century Versions of our popular Twin series are all of a eliptical planform, with a rather mildly swept back leading edge to enhance onheading openings and resemble so called hybrid constructions with ZP top panels. Vectran lines and stainless steel grommet come as a standard.

Twin Century 402

The largest size of the family. It’s design reaches back to 1996 originally marketed as a straight 9 cell made of all 1.1oz ripstop nylon. Today the 402 in it’s Century version is the choice of Tandem pilots who like to keep a low wing load to still enjoy a relatively agile
and dynamic Tandem canopy. MSW 225 kg.

Twin Century 372

The most widely sold size of all Twin Tandem canopies, the 372 impresses through it’s dependable openings and low toggle pressure. MSW : 215 kg.

Twin Century 340

Our most dynamic Tandem Canopy.The Twin 340 is ideal for lightweight Tandem Pilots, seeking a canopy which is agil, easy to handle with a light toggle pressure and a low overall system weight. With only 16.5 kg for the whole rig, the Twin 340 is a dream in terms of comfort and overall performance. MSW 205 kg.

UPT Sigma II Tandem Reserve Canopy

The Sigma II Reserve is an all low-permeability nylon, slightly tapered, nine
cell, dual-harness reserve parachute. Available in sizes 340 or 370.

The release of the Sigma II Reserve is also paired with a new deployment bag that better contains the reserve lines. Testing was done using these bags, sized for both the Micro Sigma and Sigma. NOTE: The VR360 is suitable for use in the SR370 bag; however, the SR370 will not fit in the Micro Sigma bag. 

The Sigma II Reserve 370 is designed to fit both a standard Sigma container, and a Micro Sigma. Whereas, the SR340 is designed to fit only the Micro Sigma.

GENERAL

The Sigma II Reserve is a modern 9-cell slightly tapered ram-air design that fully compliments UPT’s Sigma Tandem System. The SR’s maximum weight limit is higher than the legacy VR-360 tandem reserve. This reserve canopy is designed to open, fly and land far more like a tandem main parachute than a traditional reserve.

Following years of development and refinement, the Sigma II Reserve in both sizes (340 & 370 sq.ft.) has met and/or exceeded the required test standards of TSO-C23f.

The primary goal of the Sigma II Reserve tandem canopy developmental program was to provide an even higher level of safety to the tandem skydiving community. After many years of development and drop testing UPT is confident that the performance and reliability of this reserve parachute will speak for itself.

PACKING

Ease of packing by certificated parachute riggers was a consideration throughout the development of the Sigma II Reserve Parachute. The introduction of a cascaded Vectran line set means easier bulk distribution and a reduction in overall pack volume compared to the continuous Dacron line set used on the VR-360.

The modern planform design of the Sigma II Reserve is slightly tapered at the leading and trailing edge which makes parts of the pack job stack staggered at some locations. To aide in packing organization UPT use alternating white and black line tabs to easily identify line groups. The recommended packing method is pro-pack style reserve, see the manual for detailed packing instructions.

OPENINGS

Sub-terminal openings are typically soft and comfortable, with a short snivel and an even, progressive inflation that develops from the center to the outboard cells. Terminal openings typically involve light to moderate snatch forces, with signs of a brief snivel, before progressing into an inflation that is quick but not hard.

Tandem reserve deployments are unique in that they can occur from an inflated main parachute with a very low speed SkyHook deployment or from the very high speeds of drogueless tandem terminal. The Sigma II Reserve development specifically took this broad speed range into consideration to provide an opening that meets the altitude or time loss requirements specified by TSO-C23f. Careful attention was placed on minimizing opening forces for safety, especially in the high-speed spectrum.* Test jumps also included deployments with several induced line twists, where it was found that the Sigma II Reserve opened and inflated at generally the same rate. With reasonable body position, it remained centered overhead with no tendency toward diving or losing additional altitude.

* IMPORTANT NOTE: The FAA requires reserves to be tested beyond their placarded weights and speeds to provide an additional margin of safety. The Sigma II Reserves have been tested per the FAA’s requirements; however, you should NEVER exceed the maximum placarded weight for a reserve or deploy it at a higher airspeed than the maximum placarded speed. The deployment time and altitude described in the TSO should not be used to determine a minimum safe altitude for reserve deployment. You should always perform emergency procedures at or above the minimum altitude recommended in the Sigma Tandem Manual and Instructor Training Course.

FLIGHT CHARACTERISTICS

The Sigma II Reserve has a slightly flatter glide than the VR-360. Descent rate and glide more closely resembles that of a similar-sized main canopy than other reserves.

The Sigma II Reserve has an overall intuitive response to control inputs. The Sigma II feels similar in toggle turns to a tandem main canopy of the same size, making the control range more familiar and easier to adapt to.

The Sigma II has a fairly long control range for a reserve parachute, with excellent slow flight
characteristics. The stall point is very deep for a reserve, so much so that it may be possible to fly at full arm extension for a few seconds prior to getting a stall. Altitude permitting, it is best to check the control range, i.e. practice flares and braked flight performance of the Sigma II prior to landing.

The Sigma II Reserve is designed to minimize toggle effort while maximizing the flare power on landing. Customers will find that the increase in flare power and familiar toggle stroke make the Sigma II Reserve’s landing performance and predictability more closely resembles that of a main parachute.

The canopy responds directly to proper flare input. The beginning of the flare is easy to find, starting around mid stroke. With the long control range and powerful response, it is easier to land well, with timing of the input being less critical than for other reserve parachutes of similar size.

*Exercising proper skill and technique will result in a flaring must be timed well. Regardless of how great the flare potential is with the Sigma II Reserve, a hard landing will be the likely result from a poorly timed flare.

THE WORKHORSE OF YOUR TANDEM OPERATION

The A2 is an elliptical 9-cell canopy, built completely from ZP fabric to maintain consistent performance. Its airfoil and moderate planform factor guarantee superb handling characteristics, to minimize the workload of tandem masters.

Not only will they find the toggle pressure, turn response and flare power they have been seeking, but they will be pleasantly surprised by the soft on-heading openings.

The turn recovery and ability to slow the canopy in no wind conditions are additional features that will be greatly appreciated by all tandem masters.

The A2 is equipped with Spectra suspension lines which make for considerably less bulk and a more compact container on their back. With their lower weight the Spectra lines also reduce the risk of line dump and subsequent premature opening of the deployment bag, a significant cause of malfunctions.

Aerodyne have designed this canopy to maximize safety, but at the same time they made it an economical tool that will maximize the number of jumps per day. To reduce packing time, they chose a hybrid construction and added color coded line attachments.

To reduce air time, Aerodyne built a wing that will fly slowly in brakes, but gives you a significantly higher rate of descent when flown at full glide.

The A2 comes standard with Spectra 1500 lines, a slider with “super lightweight” stainless steel grommets, and #6 stainless steel rapide links. Naturally the A2 is compatible with all tandem harness-container systems on the market today.

Dropzone owners and tandem instructors are agreeing that the TX2 is the best possible tool for any tandem operation. Years of testing and innovation have been assembled in this completely new TX2 design that will be the top choice for instructors, riggers, DZOs, packers and passengers alike.

The launch of the S-Fire a few months earlier introduced the world to innovative design features such as Parabolic Reinforcement Tapes (PRT), 2ⁿᵈ generation of Enhanced Ram Air Stabilizers (ERAS²), and Shape Correlation for Inlet Distribution (SCID). ICARUS has integrated these elements of using the elasticity of the fabric to its’ advantage which in turn eliminates upper surface distortion and airfoil deformation, and eradicating panel flutter while simultaneously reducing the wing tip vortices are just the beginning.

Consistently soft on-heading openings are a feature that was at the forefront when designing this wing. SCID has made each TX2 naturally inflate from the center cell outward, which results in consistent on-heading openings and no need to compensate with stretchable lines. This is a key for instructors and passengers to enjoy their experience and be able to jump numerous times day after day, year after year. Icarus World realize the importance of a comfortable reliable opening sequence every time.

The TX2 is incredibly reactive to control input and gives more feedback through turns while allowing the pilot to feel a stronger connection to the wing. There is light control line pressure, so this allows for a preferred experience by passengers as well as instructors.

The Reduced Drogue Loading System is one of the highlights of this system. It is an intelligent design to carry the loads generated by the drogue, while bypassing the canopy structure itself. Two lines routed through the canopy actually transfer the load directly to the central suspension lines, which avoids stressing the canopy fabric during deployment. Less stress on the wing and less reinforcement of the drogue attachment point results in more durability and decreased canopy weight and bulk!

The TX2 was created through a 3D planform design, and doesn’t fall short with regards to impressive glide and a short recovery arc. Both the crossport reinforcements and the change in the line set configuration due to the ERAS² actively extend the life of the wing as well. The TX2 is available in the standard 6&2 Brake Configuration without a brake setting, which eases the packing process.
